Who We Are & Why We Exist
Wealth is not equally distributed. Neither is the information that builds it. Communities historically excluded from financial knowledge are not behind because of a lack of will or love. The information was never equally shared. UMEUS was naturally formed to close that gap.
A grassroots community equity organization. A movement, not a program.
We are UMEUS. Through Me. We. our mission is to empower communities with the resources, knowledge, and tools needed to change the paradigm. We partner with individuals and communities to ensure that information flows equitably to everyone who deserves it. The kind that builds wealth, prevents crises, and creates real options. What keeps us up at night are the hidden figures. The credits never claimed. The wealth never built. The gap that widens quietly because the right information was kept out of reach. That is not a personal failure. That is a systemic one. And it is exactly what UMEUS was formed to change.
We are not building dependency. We are building autonomy. Communities that own their knowledge, their decisions, and their futures on their own terms. When we are financially grounded and operating from surplus, our collective power allows us to hire, fix, build, and invest in what we need the way we know best. That is the community we are building. That is the Me, We.
The wealth gap is real, documented, and compounding.
It does not persist because communities do not work hard. It persists because a system was built that was never meant to reach everyone equally. The result is a set of hidden figures. Losses that are silent, invisible, and compounding. Wealth that should exist but does not. Knowledge that should have been passed down but was deliberately kept out of reach.
These are the hidden figures.
First-Generation Earners change makers building without a blueprint
Many first-generation earners are navigating six-figure incomes for the first time with no financial playbook passed down. Yet adults with low financial literacy are twice as likely to be debt-constrained and three times more likely to be financially fragile — regardless of income level. Earning more does not automatically mean knowing how to build with it. That knowledge has to come from somewhere. For most of us, it never did. TIAA Institute-GFLEC P-Fin Index, 2025 · Finhabits
Black Families a gap that is real, documented, and growing
$44,890 median Black household wealth vs. $285,000 for white households. And 86% of that is tied up in a primary home and a car. A primary home cannot be accessed in a financial emergency. It is not liquid. Only 1 in 3 Black households has enough liquid savings to survive three months at the poverty level. At the current pace, closing this gap would take 500 years. The gap is not closing. It is growing. Because the information never reached us equally. Federal Reserve SCF, 2022 · NCRC Analysis, 2024
Hispanic & Latino Communities includes Spanish & Portuguese speakers
19% of the U.S. population. Just 3% of the nation's total wealth. Non-Hispanic white households hold $4.47 for every $1 held by a Latino household. Federal Reserve · Morningstar, 2024
Self-Employed building without a tax map
Self-employed individuals are among the most frequently audited by the IRS — and most are underprepared on what the requirements actually are. The real cost compounds as you grow. Not updating your business structure as your income scales is where the penalties quietly accumulate. The rules do not just apply at filing. They apply at every stage of building. Most people learn that too late. IRS Data Book · U.S. Department of the Treasury, 2024
English as a Second Language Communities navigating a system in a language not their own
The financial and tax system in the U.S. was built in English. Over 25 million U.S. residents speak English less than very well. They navigate IRS notices, tax filings, and financial decisions in a language that is not their own. U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey
Women earning more, building independently, closing the gap ourselves
Women earn 83 cents for every dollar men earn and own just 32 cents for every dollar of wealth men hold. Yet women's participation in the workforce and entrepreneurship has never been higher. 81% of women say their finances keep them up at night. Only 28% feel empowered to take action. The wage gap was not built by us. The wealth we build independently, through financial knowledge and compounding decisions, does not require anyone's permission to close it. Fidelity Investments 2025 · BLS 2024 · Women's Way Gender Wealth Gap Report
And so many more. every community excluded from this information
These are not the only communities carrying this weight. They are the most documented. The pattern is the same wherever financial information was deliberately kept out of reach. That is exactly what UMEUS exists to change.

"The wealth gap does not persist because communities do not work hard. It persists because the system was never built to distribute this information equally. And what you are kept from knowing compounds just as powerfully as what you know."

You were always capable of building it. Most people just were never shown how.
Hidden figures are the compounding cost of a system that was built to exclude. Not by oversight. By design. The result shows up in our families and our finances. Wealth that should exist but does not. Decisions made from urgency because knowledge was never part of the equation. The gap was not created by a lack of effort. It was created by a lack of access.
Closing it starts with information. Shared directly. Delivered in the language you live in. Brought to the people who need it. That is what changes the trajectory. Not charity. Not waiting for the system to reach you. Just information, moving the way it should have from the beginning.

"We all have to file taxes. It is one of the few systems that touches every single one of us, regardless of income, background, or language. That is exactly why it is our entry point. Not because taxes are the whole story. Because they are the most universal, most immediate place to begin closing the gap."

The average American leaves an estimated $1,249 in unclaimed benefits on the table every year. Not from cheating. Not from complexity. Just from not knowing what they were entitled to. Multiply that across a family, a community, a generation. That is what hidden figures actually cost. And that is what changes when the information finally gets through.
Bold. Direct. Community-first.
We enter through financial literacy because your financial standing is the foundation everything else in your life is built on. When you understand your money, you own it. You build on it. The people around you benefit from it. We start here because taxes touch every single one of us. Once finances are uplifted and we move from deficit to surplus, that is when the real work begins. For us and for our communities.

Financial Literacy & Tax Education

The tax calculation has not changed since it was invented. Most people were just never taught it. We start here because taxes touch every single one of us. They are the most universal entry point into financial empowerment that exists. Understanding the calculation does not just save money at filing. Every deduction claimed, every credit applied, every dollar kept is a dollar that grows. Anyone who understands this becomes measurably wealthier over time. We start here. And we do not stop here.

Navigation & Free Federal Support

Most people facing a tax issue do not know free help already exists, paid for by the federal government, available right now. We walk them through what is available and how to access it. You do not have to figure this out alone. You never did. You just were never told.

Three Languages. One Mission.

English. Spanish. Portuguese. The information gap is not language-neutral. Access in the language you think and live in is not a courtesy. It is equity.

Community-Anchored Delivery

We go where the community is. Libraries, faith organizations, nonprofits, cultural spaces. Free. Always. We do not ask communities to come to us. We show up for them.

Me

The Prerequisite

You cannot show up fully for the people around you from a place of confusion or scarcity. Fill your cup first. That is not selfishness. That is the foundation.

We

The Overflow

When you fill your cup, the overflow is automatic. It reaches your family, your neighbor, their network. That is how equity moves. From informed people outward.

Us

The Movement

Each one of us stands in for something that needs to be represented. When you show up informed, you build proof that it is possible. Me. We. Us. World.
